GeoExchange / GeoThermal Heating and Cooling
With a name like “GeoThermal”, you might think that this kind of system is only capable of producing warm air. In fact, a properly installed GeoExchange system can efficiently cool your space the same way it pumps in warm air, but in reverse. In order to provide warmth, a GeoExchange system draws heat from the earth or surface water and pumps it into the home or business. In order to cool the air, the system draws heat from the space inside and releases it back into the earth or water. Basically, the system uses the same principle to cool your space as to heat it: it draws heat from a source and puts it elsewhere. Unlike standard single or multi-room air conditioning units, which can create wide differences in temperature from one room to another, a GeoExchange unit is capable of keeping an entire home or business consistently and evenly cooled, at a fraction of the running cost.
Air to Air Heat Pumps
Air to Air Heat Pumps are commonly referred to as HVAC systems (which simply stands for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning). Air to air heat pumps or air source heat pumps are systems similar to GeoExchange systems in that they are not creating cooled or heated air, they are just removing it from one place to another. The difference is that air-to-air systems are not buried or submerged—they draw heat strictly from the air, so this system draws heat in from the outside air in winter and removes heat from the inside in the summer. There are two types of air source heat pumps:
- Outdoor- A unitary outdoor condensing unit provides heat/cool to the
indoor air handler. An outdoor unit can connect 2-3 indoor units into one. This allows the owner to have a combination of different types of indoor units if they wish, such as ceiling cassettes, slim ducts, and wall or floor-mounted units. This kind of diversity means that the owner can truly customize their system according to their needs and space requirements. - Indoor- Indoor air handlers on a unitary heat pump delivers air through a duct system to warm or cool the building.
