Ductless Splits for Heating & Cooling
Although ductless split heat pumps have been in existence for some time now, it’s only recently that they’ve started to grow in popularity in Canada. One of the reasons ductless splits (aka ductless heat pump, ductless split air conditioners) are becoming increasingly popular is because of their versatility. With 4 different styles to choose from, these ductless split systems can be installed virtually anywhere in your home and can manage both your heating and cooling needs.
Since the heat pump units don’t freeze over, these heat pump turned air conditioners can be run all year round. A heat pump, you see, has the ability to pump air – whether the air is warm or cool. What does this mean for you, the consumer? It means that instead of buying a central air conditioning unit and a heat pump, you can get a heat pump that does both the heating and the air conditioning. This translates to increased efficiency and since there is only one unit, the maintenance on the systems is also reduced.
4 Styles of Ductless Split Systems
Ductless split air conditioning units are essentially made up of two components – the heat pump and the vents that distribute the air throughout the house. Although there is only one heat pump unit located outside the house, there can be many vents inside the house, depending on your house’s size and layout.
Here are the different types of ductless splits available
- Floor Mounted – as the name implies, these units sit on your floor and are usually located on an outside wall next to a window to allow for easy connection to the heat pump outside.
- Wall Mounted – not nearly as large as the floor unit but still rather substantial in size, these wall mounted units can be placed up and out of the way in larger rooms such as the living room or master bedroom.
- Slim Duct – these vents look similar to what you’re used to seeing on the floor of your home, only they are installed in the ceiling. These types of vents work well in larger rooms that typically have issues maintaining a consistent temperature. You can connect from 2 to 8 of these units and place them throughout your home to give you consistently cool temperatures throughout your home – and all controlled by zones.
- Cassette – cassette units are rectangular shaped units that distributes air through each of its four sides. These A/C splits work well for large, square rooms where there are no dividing walls to get in the way of the air flow.
There are many reasons to install a ductless air conditioning system. Here are a couple:
- Your house doesn’t have any ductwork because it’s heated with electric floorboards or a radiator, for example.
- Your home has ductwork but the size of the ducts make it very inefficient and would create a huge waste of energy and money each month.
- You only need to cool or heat one area rather than the whole house.
