Available Heat Pump Rebates for BC Residents in 2024

Get thousands of dollars in heat pump grants and rebates for switching to a heat pump! There are so many renovation and heat pump rebates for BC residents that it can be hard to keep track of what’s available.

BC Heat Pump Rebates come from various sources, including BC Hydro, Fortis BC, the federal government, municipalities, and other government bodies. Sometimes, rebates are even provided by the heat pump manufacturers themselves.

If you do some research in advance (don’t worry though, we’ve done it for you!), you can come out with a very sizeable rebate for switching away from fossil fuels to a more efficient and eco-friendly alternative, such as a heat pump.

We’ve created this page to help you figure out what heat pump rebates you’re eligible for. This will depend on what heating and cooling solution you opt for, which one you currently have, where you live and your combined household income.

If you’re looking to upgrade to a heat pump, here are the rebates available in British Columbia. Remember that these rebates can be combined for maximum savings.

• Up to $4000 in Municipal Top Ups
• Up to 100% for the NEW Energy Savings Program Air-to-Water Heat Pump Rebates
• Up to $5000 from the Canada Greener Homes Grant

Home Renovation Rebate Program and CleanBC Home Efficiency Rebates

Here is a breakdown of the home heating rebates available when you upgrade your home heating and cooling system. You can also access them by clicking HERE.

Municipal Top-Ups

The rebates above apply to anyone in BC, while the municipal top-ups below are only available to certain municipalities, as in the chart below:

Note that the municipal top-ups can run out at any time. Each municipality has a pool of money, and when the money runs out, so do the top-up rebates.

Federal Government Grants for Home Heating: Canada Greener Homes Grant

Grants for adding a ground source heat pump are available up to $5,000, or for replacing a ground source heat pump are available up to $3,000. Grants for adding an air source heat pump are available up to $4,000, or adding a cold climate heat pump up to $5,000. Grants for replacing your domestic water heater with an Energy Star-certified model are available for up to $1,000. Your heat pump unit must be installed by a licensed professional and be on a list of eligible products found on the official Government of Canada home retrofit page.

To simplify, below are two examples of how much of a rebate you can expect. Note that municipal top-ups are a limited-time offer – municipal funding is subject to availability and offered on a first-come, first-served basis and is not guaranteed.

Eg #1 – BC Heat Pump Rebate for Duncan Resident

Duncan resident installing new heat pump, switching from any fossil fuel (oil, natural gas or propane) and maximizing the Heat Pump Group Purchase rebate as well as the Canada Greener Homes Grant.

Max Rebates Available: $11,350

(Up to $6000 for new heat pump installation + $350 municipal top up + $5000 greener homes grant) = $11,350

Eg #2 – Heat Pump Rebate for Victoria BC Resident 

Victoria Resident installing new heat pump, switching from any fossil fuel (oil, natural gas or propane) and maximizing the Heat Pump Group Purchase rebate

Max Rebates Available: $13,500

(Up to $6000 for new heat pump installation + up to $500 group purchase rebate + $2000 municipal top up + $5000 greener homes grant) = $13,500

BC Hydro offers some good rebates when you upgrade your system to an air-source heat pump.  Depending on where you live and the heating system you choose, you can get thousands of dollars in rebates.

To qualify for the rebates above, your heat pump must be installed by a BC Hydro Registered Heat Pump Contractor such as Lockhart Industries Ltd.
