Learn How to Clean (or Replace) Your HVAC Filter
Filters need to be cleaned regularly or replaced, in order to ensure that the HVAC unit is working efficiently. The problem is, once its tucked away inside the HVAC unit, the filter can often get moved into the “out of sight, out of mind” category. Replacing or cleaning the filter doesn’t tend to be on the top of a homeowner’s daily priority list, but regular cleaning or replacement of the filter is necessary for the HVAC system to run at peak performance. Making sure your filters are cleaned or replaced as needed is a sure way to save your lungs and your system.
There are several good reasons to maintain your filter regularly:
- To prolong the life of your HVAC unit. By allowing your unit to get dirty, you are increasing the risk of a costly repair or even a unit replacement.
- To reduce energy costs. A clogged filter makes the unit work harder to force air throughout the home, which results in higher energy costs.
- To keep the air clean. Keeping your filter clean allows the unit to do its job of cleaning the air in your home. This is especially important when there are pets in the home, or people with respiratory problems or environmental allergies.
Clean it, or Replace it?
There are two categories of air filter for HVAC systems: disposable and permanent filters.
Disposable filters are constructed to be the immediately cheaper option, with a cost that is under $15, but you’ll end up paying more in the long run. Since they are made largely of paper and designed to be replaced, cleaning them is not an option. As such, they need to be replaced once they become clogged.
Permanent filters cost more at the start, but they end up saving you money because you don’t need to replace them. These filters are constructed of more sophisticated materials, so that they can be taken out and cleaned regularly.
How to Clean Your Permanent HVAC Filter
By following these simple steps, you will be able to properly clean your permanent filter, allowing your HVAC unit to operate at peak performance.
- Turn off the unit.
- Remove the access panels so that you can get to the filter.
- Remove the filter.
- Gently wash the filter, using a garden hose or showerhead (using warm water if available).
- Make sure it is completely dry before placing it back in the unit.
- Place the filter back into the unit.
- Replace the access panels.
- Turn on the unit.
It’s important to remember that, when you are spraying the filter clean, you need to make sure you are using a gentle spray. If there is too much pressure, the force of the water can spread the fibers, which will render the filter ineffective.
